Music Tuition

Instrumental and Vocal Tuition

The School is very fortunate to work in partnership with Merton Music Foundation (MMF).

Tuition is given by experienced tutors either at West Wimbledon Primary School or at Merton Music Centre. The choice of instruments offered at each school depends on the number of pupils who apply. If the instrument you require is not currently taught at West Wimbledon Primary School you may apply directly to Merton Music Centre for lessons outside school hours. Group, shared or individual lessons may be requested, and there are choices for the length of lessons. Pupils generally start with group lessons of between three and six pupils depending on the type of instrument. More advanced pupils progress to tuition on a shared or individual basis.

MMF offers tuition across the full range of instruments:

  • Brass – Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba
  • Strings – Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass
  • Woodwind – Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Saxophone
  • Percussion
  • Piano
  • Electric Keyboard
  • Recorder
  • Guitar
  • Voice

On site tuition is available for piano and guitar only, at this point in time: due to current parental demand. A greater range of instrument tuition might be available within school should a sufficient number of West Wimbledon parents choose a particular instrument.

Merton Music Foundation’s website now makes it even easier to find out information about the instruments taught, the cost and what else might be available. West Wimbledon parents can sign up for music lessons by following this link. Once there, you can set up an account, choose ‘West Wimbledon Primary School’, select an instrument (currently piano or guitar) and a lesson format, and enrol yourchild.
The music teacher will then be in touch to arrange starting lessons.

Children are usually taught on a rota basis so they don’t miss the same lessons each week. Working with MMF tutors, we try to schedule afternoon lessons as a preference, but this is not always possible.

Financial Assistance

Lessons are provided, free, for children who are entitled to the Pupil Premium.Parents may apply for financial assistance from Merton Music Foundation Trust Fund. The principle criteria for obtaining this assistance is that the parent must currently be in receipt of Working Tax Credit or the child must be getting Free School Meals (excluding children in receipt of Universal Free School Meals).Enquiries, which are treated in confidence, should be made to the Chief Executive of Merton Music Foundation. Please see MMF’s Financial Support section for further information.
