Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
At West Wimbledon Primary School, we pride ourselves on being a welcoming inclusive environment for all children.
We strive to remove barriers to learning, to enable all pupils to achieve equitably and participate fully at school. In order to do this, many steps are taken to support pupils in their learning. We maintain a primary focus on high quality inclusive classroom teaching so that all children can reach at least age-expected levels. However, for some children, additional support is needed to help them achieve this.
The 2014 Code of Practice says: “A child or young person has special educational needs if he or she has a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her. A learning difficulty or disability is a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age. Special educational provision means educational or training provision that is additional to, or different from, that made generally for others in a mainstream setting in England.”
Children with SEN will have needs and requirements that fall into at least one of the following four areas:
- Communication and interaction
- Cognition and learning
- Social, emotional and mental health
- Sensory and/or physical
Further support and information for young people and their families regarding SEND can be found in our SEN information report (on the Policies page) and through Merton and their local offer: Merton Local Offer
